Feeling Stuck and Hopeless?

by | Sep 24, 2015 | Devotionals

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.  He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. (2 Sa. 22:17-20)

I stand amazed at how God has redeemed so many horrible situations in my life. He has not just done it once, but again and again. Even more amazing is the fact that scripture tells me he delights in me! (As he delights in all of His children).  I certainly have done nothing to deserve that! In fact, if I went by feelings, I would expect him to be upset with me nearly all the time. I know how much I blow it daily, and yet he delights in me! He treasures me and finds joy in me! It’s hard to fathom that he ever could. I do pray daily that I will bring joy to his heart, and I know that as our children can grieve us, we can grieve him. However, I think it’s a lot less frequent than we think. Scripture says he understands our weaknesses and doesn’t condemn us (Ps. 103:13-14, Heb. 4:15-16, John 3:17).

As I look at this passage, I love that he rescues us from foes that are too strong for us! Even when we feel powerless, there is hope because our God goes to battle for us. Not only does he deliver us from places that have us feeling trapped and overwhelmed, he brings us into a “spacious” place. That says to me, he delivers us from whatever had us bound and sets us free. Sometimes deliverance is not fast. The writer here is David, who had to hide out in caves from Saul. He knew what it was like to feel overwhelmed and afraid, but he chose to seek God rather than give in to his fears. As a result, God completely delivered him and gave him victory. He exalted him as king over all Israel. It all came down to God’s love and David’s choice to believe him.

No matter what we face in life, God wants to rescue us. Nothing is impossible for him; even when it is impossible for us! It may seem like we are drowning, but he reaches down and pulls us out. We may be overwhelmed by people and situations that seem way beyond our control, but he comes and saves us when we choose to trust him. He supports us when everyone else lets us down. He is fully trustworthy.

Lord, I am so grateful to be your child. It completely amazes my that you would ever delight in me, but you do! I am overwhelmed by your goodness. Thank you for pulling me out of deep waters (those situations that threatened to drown me in despair) and rescuing me from enemies that were too powerful for me to overcome. You are simply amazing. You are kind and gracious far beyond what I deserve. Help me to always choose to believe you rather than being overwhelmed by life. Thank you for victory. Amen
